Caution: Multiple Deborah Allens

The daughters of Bozoan Allen, of Hingham, both of whom died in childhood:

  1. Deborah, Nov. 10, 1645, d. 3 Dec.; 1647.
  2. Deborah, Nov. 20, 1648, d. 4 Feb. 1660-61.[1]

Deborah, the daughter of William Allen of Salem, of whom Robert Charles Anderson states "no further record;" probably died in childhood.[2]

Disputed Items

Date of Birth: Her birth date is often given as April 23, 1637 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. No such birth record is known to exist. The referenced date is almost certainly the baptismal date "borrowed" from the account at Salem about Deborah Allen, daughter of immigrant William Allen of Salem and Manchester, and his wife Elizabeth. See the Salem published record (1:34) at Massachusetts Vital Records Project.

Date of Death: Joseph Buckland had two wives named Deborah; the first died in 1690, the second in 1720. They are often confused with each other.

Biography

The Deborah Allen who married Joseph Buckland is identified as the daughter of John2 (George1) and John's wife Christian (birth surname unknown) Allen by Martin E. Hollick in his 2012 article, "John Barrows of Plymouth". Of this association, Hollick notes, "Both wife Christian and daughter Deborah Buckland were named in the will of John Allen dated 12 March 1689[/90], proved 27 May 1690," citing "Bristol County Probate 1:19."[3] Hollick further refers to the Great Migration article[4] featuring immigrant George Allen.

Based on the birth of her first child, she was born about 1635; based on records involving her father, this was somewhere in New Plymouth Colony. The New Plymouth Colony vital records are missing the first portion of the manuscript; what remains starts in the year 1647. [5]

Deborah and Joseph Bucklin were married on November 5, 1659 in Rehoboth.[6] She was the mother to all nine known children.[7]

Deborah was buried at Rehoboth, 27 November 1690.[8]

Joseph married again, 17 October 1693,[9] as her second husband, "Deborah, probably Pratt, daughter of Joshua^1 and Bathsheba (_____) Pratt. Joseph's second wife was born "say 1642" and died Rehoboth, 1 April 1720. Hollick's article identifies Joseph's second wife as the second wife and widow of John Barrows of Plymouth.

Allen-11690 and Allen-3947 appear to represent the same person because: Deborah (Allen) Buckland appears in the will of her father, John Allen of Swansea, as "my daughter Buckland" and in the will of her brother Isaac Allen as "my sister Buckland." Also, there is an entry of her marriage to Joseph Buckland in the Rehoboth Vital Record. See all the noise about it all in the Allen-3947 profile.
