Biography

From FAG: Everline Allen Rockwood was born the second of six children to Calvin Allen (1791-1854) and his wife Polly Leach Allen (1794-1843). She was born in Massachusetts. In 1818 the family moved west to Oneida Co. in New York State, settling in the village of Remsen where Calvin earned a livelihood as a carpenter. In Remsen Everline met Nathaniel Rockwood (1811-1869) whose family had moved from New England around 1794. The couple were married on January 8, 1835. Seven children were born to this union: Jerome Edwin (b. 1835), Esther b. 1837), Charles Priestly (b. 1839), Anna Eliza (b. 1841), Spencer Henry (b. 1851), Ella Caroline (b. 1854), and Marion Emogene (b. 1857).

According to an unpublished family history written by son Jerome: Mr. and Mrs. Rockwood were reared on farms; they were educated in the common schools of the State of New York. They were trained at their homes by religious and patriotic parents to revere their God, to honor their parents and to respect and obey the laws of their country. They were also taught to be industrious, temperate and prudent in their habits and to exercise a spirit of charity towards others. They in their turn, as their children advanced in age and increased in numbers charged or imparted to them similar lessons and rules of action.

This family lived on a farm at Fairchild's Corners, near Remsen, until the spring of 1854, when they removed to Union City, Erie Co., Pa., near which place Mr. Rockwood purchased a farm, which was the home of the family for many years. After the death of her husband Mrs. Rockwood moved into the village where she spent the remainder of her life.

In their religious convictions they were Baptists and in politics Republican. [Jerome Edwin Rockwood, et al., "The Rockwood Family: A Bit of Genealogy," completed ca. 1914/15.]
