He was the 11th child born to his parents, apparently in Washington County, Indiana, when that area was still part of the Indiana United States Territory. He also lived in Jackson County, Indiana before 1859, then Jackson County. From 1865 until his death, he lived in Sullivan County, Indiana.
The biographical manuscript, mentioned below, says that he married Mary Goen on 20 Dec 1832. County records, however, say that their marriage occurred on 19 Dec 1832. After her death, he married Lucinda Russell.

Biographical manuscript probably dictated by James T. Allen, apparently transcribed by his son William Jackson Allen, and possibly held by his daughter Mary Elizabeth Allen Wilkey. Steve Allen found this manuscript among the belongings of John Allen after his stroke in 2006. The manuscript is scanned and on the web. During 2007 Steve Allen corresponded with Dennis Lancaster who provided images of Mary E. Allen Wilkey, William J. Allen, and his family Bible. The handwriting in the family Bible matches the handwriting of the biographical manuscript.
