Biography

Mary Allison was born on 11 December 1782 at Washington, Virginia; daughter of Thomas Allison and Cassandra Bird

She married Moses Curtis, son of Thomas Curtis Sr. and Eleanor Bryant, circa 1800 at Burke, North Carolina.

There is incomplete evidence as to whether Mary Allison was Moses' only wife or that he had two wives, given the five year gap in his children between 1812 and 1817. The theory that he married Mary Strain, also born in 1782 and the daughter of Andrew Strain, Sr. and Mary Reed, seems to have been discredited.

Mary Allison appeared on the census of 1810 Morgantown, Burke, North Carolina, in the household of Moses Curtis; page 333, 2 males and 2 females under 10, 1 male 26-44 and 1 female 16-25.

Mary Allison appeared on the census of 1820 Burke, North Carolina, in the household of Moses Curtis; page 95, 2 males and 2 females under 10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 1 male 18-25 and 1 female 16-25, 1 male over 45 and 1 female 26-44.

Mary Allison appeared on the census of 1840 Burke, North Carolina, in the household of Moses Curtis; page 332, 2 females 15-19, 1 male 60-69, 1 female 50-59.

Mary Allison appeared on the census of 16 August 1850 McDowell, North Carolina, in the household of Moses Curtis, occupation M.E. clergyman, real estate valued at $900, no children at home, Nancy Talent, age 21, lived with them.2

Mary Allison died circa January 1864 at Buncombe, North Carolina; estate was probated 12 February 1864, Elijah B. Kerlee, Administrator.1
