Joseph was very active in the community. Along with William Murdock, William Deal, John Hall, and John Woods, he was one of the charter members of Little River Church
Born in Lacaster Co., he came south to North Carolina with his brother John and their mother Grizzell Wray Allison, a native of East Lothian, Scotland. She died in Orange Co. in May 1794 and is most likely buried in the Old Eno Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cedar Grove. Served as Postmaster from 1932-1844.
