Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1888. Elizabeth Alloway ... She passed away in 1963. [1]

As early as 1900 and 1910, she was using the name Bertha (Census). The 1920 census shows her as Lizzy B. Howery. Her birth near the Yankton Sioux Reservation and early married years near the Rosebud Reservation probably gave rise to the idea that she was part Brulé Sioux. Concerning her childhood, she remembered that her family lived in a dugout and in the spring snakes often came out of the walls (Durand).

After her first husband's death, Bertha returned to Colorado, where her aunt Nancy (Alloway) Oard lived. She re-married to Evi Long at Fremont in 1924 or at Greeley in 1929. Neither she nor her husband are listed in the 1930 city directory. She is listed on the 1930 census in Greeley, and in the 1931 1931 Greeley city directory as Mrs. Evi Long at 821 5th Street.

In 1938 she married Edward Wolking. Their marriage ended, but they did not divorce because she did not believe in it.

In 1940 she was living in Greeley, in a rented house at 500 8th Street: Bertha Wolking (52), born in South Dakota; Warren Howery (17), son, born in Nebraska; Carroll Long (15), son, born in Nebraska; Eulah Howery (9), granddaughter, born in Colorado; Junior Howery (7), grandson, born in Colorado; and Carl Anderson (63), lodger, born in Sweden. Son Warren was an apprentince photographer. Lodger Carl Anderson was a cement worker. They were all living the same place they had lived in 1935. The census also provides additional information: her parents were both born in Illinois, the language spoken in her childhood home was English, she had no Social Security number, she had been married more than once, she was age 16 at the time of her first marriage, and she had borne eight children, not including stillbirths. This information appears to be accurate, except that her father was born in Iowa (not Illinois), and she had borne nine children.

She attended the Free Methodist Church in Greeley and later, after her marriage to Edward Wolking ended, the Church of God. Her first husband and three of her uncles were Methodist circuit riders.

4 Injured in Auto-Truck Crash at Gill

Four people were injured in an automobile-truck collision one mile north-east of Gill late Friday afternoon. The injured, all of whom were taken to the Greeley hospital, are:

Mrs. Bertha Long, 59, of 021 Fifteenth street, Greeley, severe leg cuts.

Warren Howery, 13, same address as above, severe head cuts.

Carl Anderson, 50, same address, leg fracture, cuts and bruises.

Carroll Long, 11, same address, cuts and bruises, was discharged from hospital after being given first aid.

The car driven eastward by Anderson crashed into a westbound truck loaded with hogs driven by Ralph Laney of 602 Thirteenth street, Greeley. Courtesy patrol said that Anderson's car was on the left side of the highway on the curve where the accident occurred. The report absolved Laney of any blame for the accident.

Mrs. Bertha Long and E. D. Wolking, both of Greeley, were married in a quiet ceremony Thursday evening in the parlors of First Presbyterian Church. Rev. F. O. Worthy, pastor of the Free Methodist Church , officiated at the service at 8:30 o'clock.
