Edith's mother seems to have died during childbirth or shortly after her birth. Her father then married her (aunt) mother's sister while Edith was still an infant.

OBIT Spartanburg Herald-Journal 9/11/1955 Mrs. Edith Allred Cooper, 85, of Route 4 died Saturday morning at General Hospital. She was the wife of the late J.J. Cooper. Mrs. Coo-per was a member of Hayne Bapt. Ch. Surviving are four sons: A.D. of Rte. 7, Horace of Greenville, Fred of Spartanburg and Carl of the U.S. Army in Alaska. Four Daughters, Mrs. Maude Treadway of Union, Mrs. Nora Scruggs of Columbia, Mrs. Alice Atkins of Rte. 4 and Mrs. Mary Holloway of Spartanburg, a brother John Allred of Caroleen, N.C. ; two sisters Mrs. Myrtle Featherstone of Belmont, SC and Mrs. Ella Ward of Marion, N.C. 41 grandchildren, and 55 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday @2 pm at Hayne Bapt. Ch. by the Revs. Joe Royalty and Claude Campbell. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery at Gastonia, NC. Grandsons will be pallbearers. The body will be at the M.W. Bobo Funeral Chapel until 10 am today when it will be carried to the home of her son, A.D. Cooper. It will be placed in the church Monday at noon.
