from The Annals of the Forty, a History of Grimsby Township:
"The original Althouse came to America from Hesse-Darmstadt Germany. His name according to his signature dated Oct. 17, 1749 was Arndt Althaus. He was the ancestor of George Althouse ,who with other Pennsylvania pioneers came to Canada in 1801. During and after the Revolutionary War, this family being of German parentage had not been persecuted as other Loyalists, however George, then a young man of 21 was desirous of living in this new country under the British flag. He was even more loyal than many so called Loyalists, for it was common knowledge among his family that his children should appear to be British that he refused to let them speak German or even learn the language."
