John was born John Ambler in 1805 Little Preston, Swillington, Yorkshire and baptised John Ambler on 2 June 1805 Whitkirk, St. Mary, Yorkshire the son of Samuel Ambler of Little Preston ^{[1] [2]}

With mother Hannah & brothers Joseph (20) James (15) & nephew Joseph (3) in 1841 living at Great Manston, Whitkirk, Yorkshire.^[3]

John unmarried, working as coal miner in 1851 was living with brother William & his family in Manston, Whitkirk, Yorkshire. ^[4]

Living in Colton, Whitkirk, Yorkshire, single & working as a coalminer in 1861 with mother Hannah & nephew Joseph.^[5]
