Biography

George Ambler was previously supposed to have been born in Leeds and to have died in Staffordshire, as well as being connected with Wath upon Dearne. However, Martin C. Styan has concluded on the basis of the parish register and census information available to him that George spent most of his life in and around Wath upon Dearne in the southern part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. George Ambler was born in 1788 at Wath. On 24 December 1810 he married Ann Pillow at Wath. They had one child, Joseph, born in 1812, before Ann died in 1813 aged only 20. George got married again on 21 November 1814 to Ann Awty, also at Wath. The children from his second marriage were John, William, Lucy, Amelia, Abraham, Sarah, Harriet and Mary. George worked as a potter at Newhill near Wath. He died aged 53 in 1842 at Newhill.

The above was written on the basis of printed copies of scans of the original papers obtained from ancestry.co.uk in 2009. The surname of 85 year old George was not clear to me. After looking at the family tree of Gillian Birkinshaw on familytreedna I considered “Awtey”. According to familysearch it is “Awty”. This is probably correct. The name is also spelt “Auty” on familysearch According to familysearch Amelia was aged 15. On the scan her age appears to have been changed with 5 and 8 superimposed. According to the family tree of Gillian Birkinshaw on familytreedna (family finder match) the wife of George Ambler was Ann Awtey daughter of George Awtey. Brampton Bierlow was originally a village in the ancient parish of Wath upon Dearne, but in the 19th century it was made a separate parish.

• The 1851 Census records from Wath upon Dearne provides evidence that two of the children of George and Ann Ambler were born in the Leeds area rather than at Wath or Newhill.

• auty-1.one-name.net has Isaac Ambler born about 1834 accepted as son of George and Ann Ambler of Newhill, Wath. This originates from familysearch. However, the basic facts available on familysearch show that this Isaac Ambler was the son of another couple named George and Ann Ambler, who lived in the Halifax area.
