John was born about 1800. He was the son of Frances Amos and Nancy Proffitt. John married Sarah (Sally) Tucker and together they were parents of eight children. They farmed in Stokes County, North Carolina where John passed away in late 1843.

Among the Stokes County North Carolina Probate records for John Amos 1844
is an Appeal to the December term 1843 of the Stokes County Court by Sally Amos for Dower. Following is the ruling to that appeal:
“State of North Carolina Stokes County Dec term 1843
Ordered by the Court that Flemming Priddy, Joseph H. Scales, Daniel Hutcherson and N. Vernon be appointed to lay off and allot to Sally Amos a years support out of the Estate of her deceased husband John Amos and that they make a report to the next Court.”
