Biography

Helen was born in Muskegon, Michigan in 1903, the daughter of Gustave Hammer and Anna Anderson. Her mother died soon afterward in 19xx, and her father was drowned in a boating accident on Lake Muskegon in 1907. She was adopted by her maternal grandparents (to confirm) Martin Anderson and Greta Larson, recent immigrants from Norway. The family later moved to Chicago to stay with the family of Martin and Greta's daughter Inga. Helen did not finish high school and already at the age of 16 was working as a stenographer for the railroad company. She married Charles Arthur Eddy, another child of Scandinavian immigrants, in about 1925. They remained in Chicago and had three children together, one who died at birth. Charles worked in sheet metal manufacturing for awhile and then by 1933 had got into the business of milk sales which he continued until his death in Chicago in 1961. Helen passed away in 1979.

The link between Helen Eddy and her parents Martin and Greta Andersen is not fully confirmed, but looks very strong. No other viable candidate families were identified. The link is based on her maiden name Anderson in her children's birth records, and the link to her parents as the Andersen's in the probable death record. Also note that her birthplace in her child's birth record is Muskegon, the same as in the Social Security death records. These links match well the 1920 census record that puts them together in Chicago. Note that the lodger in their house in 1940 has Helen's mother's maiden name of Larson, so may have been a relation.
