On Last Names

By Swedish culture, Johanna would have been born as Johanna Simonsdotter, and had her name changed after moving to the U.S. To avoid confusion, the family prefers to maintain the name as Anderson.

Biography

Johanna Josephine "Joan" Anderson was born on April 17, 1875,[1] in Ljusnarsberg, Örebro, Sweden,[2] to Simon and Johanna Anderson.[3] She left Sweden with her parents (under the traditional Swedish name Johanna Simonsdotter) on March 31, 1880.[2] By the 1885 census, the family had settled in Columbus, Anoka, Minnesota.[4]

She was married on October 24, 1893, to Stephen Ward Barott in Chisago City, Minnesota.[1] In 1898, her husband homesteaded 66 acres in Aitkin Co. Sec. 24, Township 49, Range 23.[1] At the time of the 1900 census, they were living on this homestead, along with two daughters and a son. He was a farmer, and they lived near both the other Barotts and the Andersons in the district.[5] The five of them were still here in 1905.[6] It was still the five of them in 1910, but by then they were living in Haugen Township 49-22, and she was working as a schoolteacher. [7] They were joined here by a third daughter and second son and a boarder by the time of the 1920 census.[8] The five of them had moved to 615 Sixth Street North in Aitkin Township by the 1930 census, at which time his profession had changed to that of a sawyer running the lumber mill.[9]

By 1940, their children had moved out, and he was back to employment as a farmer, and they were living in Shamrock, Aitkin County.[10]

She died on November 19, 1946, in Aitkin County, Minnesota.[11] She is buried at Round Lake Cemetery in Aitkin County, Minnesota.[3]
