Biography

Mary Frances "Fannie" Anderson was born on July 25, 1846 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States. She was the daughter of James Anderson and Nancy Caroline Calvert Dunn, Anderson. She was sometimes called Fanny.[1] [2]

In the 1850 U. S. Census (December 4, 1850) the family was enumerated in Saluda Regiment, Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States. Her father was a wheelwright. Her mother was thirty-seven-year-old Nancy Caroline Anderson. Fanny was four years old. She had five siblings. The household included sixteen-year-old Margaret and fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Dunn who were the children of Nancy from her first marriage.[3]

In about 1853 Frances' half-sister, Margaret, married Benjamin Franklin Smith. They had six children. Margaret died in about 1867. Frances would have been about twenty-two when Margaret died and likely helped to care for the Smith children. She married Benjamin Franklin Smith in about 1868 or 1869. Their first child, Udora, was born in May of 1870.[4]

In the 1870 U. S. Census the family was listed in White Hall, Abbeville, South Carolina. Benjamin was a forty-two-year-old farmer. Francis (sic) was twenty-five-years-old and was keeping house. The home included their two-month-old daughter who is un-named in this record but in later records was named, Udora. The other children in the family were T. C. (Tabitha) Smith, Lizzie (Elizabeth) Smith, S. A. Smith (Lillian Alice Smith), M. O. (Mattie) Smith, Wm. R. Smith and Maggie B. Smith.[4]

In the 1880 U. S. Census (8 June 1880) the family remained in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Benjamin was fifty-one and working in carpentry. Frances was keeping house. There were seven children in the household. Mattie age 18, Willie age 17 and Margaret age 14 were the children of Frances' sister and Benjamin. Frances had four children: Udora, Jesse, Annie, and George. Frances' parents James L. age seventy and Nancy C. Anderson age sixty-nine also were in the household.[5]

They had one more child, a daughter named Tommie, on December 16, 1881in Abbeville.[6]

Benjamin died on May 21,1888 in Abbeville. His son William R. Smith was the administrator of the estate and an auction to sell Benjamin's real estate consisting of 52 acres in Abbeville was held in November 1889.[7][8]

In the 1900 U. S. Census (June 20, 1900) Fanny was fifty-four-years-old living in Abbeville Township, Abbeville County, South Carolina in a rented home. There were two children remaining at home. George, age 21, and Tommie, age 18. Both were working in a cotton mill. George was a "spreader" and Tommie was a "weaver".[9]

In the 1910 U. S. Census (26 April 1910) Fannie M. Smith was sixty-four years old and living with her daughter Susie E. Miller (Susie Eudora) in Abbeville Township. Susie had been married three years to Joseph Morton Miller. Joseph was working in a machinist in a cotton mill.[10]

In the 1920 U. S. Census (January 8, 1920) Fannie remained with Susie and Joe. Joe was listed as a machinist on the railroad.[11]

Frances died at 5:00 Sunday morning June 11, 1922 at the home of Susan Eudora in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States. She died of Bright's Disease (disease of the kidney). She was seventy-six years old.[1][2][12]

I removed James W. Anderson and Nancy C (Laird) Anderson as the parents of "Frances Caroline Anderson (Smith)" because they were married in Mississippi. This Frances married in South Carolina and is, I believe, the daughter of James L. Anderson and his wife Nancy Caroline Calvert (Dunn, Anderson).

The birth and death dates in the current profile match the death certificate dates for Mary Frances Anderson (Smith). I am leaving this Frances as the wife of Benjamin. If James W. and Nancy Anderson had a daughter, Frances Caroline, a new profile with correct places and dates will need to be added.
