August 1985
First husband William Thomson died in 1891 aged only 33. William's twin sister, Elizabeth Thomson, had died three years earlier, in 1888. Elizabeth Thomson's husband Robert Young then married his sisiet-in-law - who was married to his wife's twin.
No formal marriage certificate has been found for Robert Young and Elizabeth Anderson, but Elizabeth's death certificate in 1922 - and her gravestone - confirm that Robert Young, Station Master at Beith, was Elizabeth's second husband. They married some time between 1891 - when Elizabeth Anderson was widowed - and April 1901, when the census was held.
The 1901 census finds Elizabeth living at Dalry Road (possibly in Station Cottage, though it doesn't say so). She is described as Eliza, Robert's wife, married, aged 44, born in Dalry. Husband Robert is described as head of household, aged 50, occupation Railway Station Master, born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Also present are Robert's children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Thomson. They are Janet, aged 18, occupation Dressmaker (apprentice), born in Beith; Jane, aged 16, scholar, born in Beith; and Robert, aged 15, a Railway Clerk, born in Beith.
According to Chris Pigott, great-grandson of Robert Young/Elizabeth Thomson's daughter Janet, Elizabeth Anderson was extremely unpopular with the three Young children. So much so that both Janet and her sister Jane left the country, and (it is rumoured) son Robert became an alcoholic (source Chris Pigott).
Elizabeth died in Glasgow on 4th August 1922 aged 64 - could be 12 Claremont (or Quatremont) Terrace, in Hillhead. The certificate confirms that she normally lived at Station Cottage Beith, and confirms that her parents were James Anderson and Jean Stirrat, both deceased. The certificate also confirms that Elizabeth was first married to William Thomson, Farmer, then to Robert Young, Railway Station Master. The writing is difficult to read but it looks like she dies of pancreatic cancer. Her widower Robert Young signed the death certificate.
Elizabeth's gravestone confirms that she was born in 1858 and died on 4 August 1922 aged 65.
