Went to China to represent the House of Dent &Co. In 1854 when on the Canton River in a country boat, with 2 other young men, he was suddenly attcked by pirates. Being well armed, the little party made a desperate defence, killing eight and wounding nine of their assailants, - Vide "Chambers Journal" March 1857.
