He had four brothers and four sisters.[1][3][4][5] According to "History of Newcastle & Gateshead," (1887), his eldest sibling was Jane. Her husband Christopher Mitford, was the mayor of Newcastle in 1569.[6]

  • 1. Jane (will 16 Oct 1606; bur. St. Nicholas), eldest sibling.[6]

Early Life

Henry came from a wealthy and politically connected family in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. His father served as alderman, mayor, and is believed to have been a member of Parliament during 1523, 1536, 1539, 1542, and 1546, although some Newcastle records listing members have been lost.[2] Henry's father was also a wealthy shipping merchant, owning or having joint ownership of at least six ships in Newcastle.[7]

Although a product of privledge, Henry would have grown up in the chaos of the Anglo-Scottish wars and the turbulent political climate of 16th century England. Despite these challenges, however, Henry's father grew his wealth and at the time of his death, the patriarch's property holdings were extensive, which he distributed to his children and grandchildren. In Henry Sr.'s will, he bequeathed to Henry the following:

"...his full childes porcion of my goodes one hundrethe poundes. And I gyve him the house that I dwell in wth all the houshold stuffe to him and to his heires (ceyvinge all my waires, woole, playte, Jewelles, moneye, debte bookes obligaciones bylles of payment the beif and fyshe wch I haue prouyded for the furnyture of my shippes) for euer. And twoo gilte gobletts and a coveringe, twoo gylte saltes with a coveringe. And I gyve him the other half of my Tenement before my dore wch I had of the Kinge lyinge vpon the stare. And the other halfe of the wayste that I had of Cuthbert Musgrave and Nocholas Thorton. And a dozen of syluer spoones wth madenheads." (p. 165)[3]

It also seems, although difficult to read due to poor copy, that Henry Sr. gave his son a house in Sandgate and another in "the whyte crosse."[3] Given the substance of Henry's inheritance, it seems likely that he participated in his father's shipping business and with this inherited wealth, lived a comfortable, if not prosperous life. Of interest, Henry was the only son to receive any bequest related to his father's shipping concerns. Moreover, he is further referred to as "esquier" in his cousin's will, as well as being noted as from one of the wealthiest mercantile families of Newcastle.[5]

Marriage

Henry married Dorothy Wood.[1] She was the daughter of Gyles Wood of Pickering, co. York.[8][9] The date and location of this marriage have not been found.

children

Henry and Dorothy had seven children, listed in birth order: [1]

  • (s & h) Henry
  • Abraham
  • Francis
  • Bartram
  • Clement
  • Bartholomew
  • Agnes (dsp).

Death

Henry Anderson's date of death and burial location are unknown. It is possible, however, that he is interred at St. Nicholas's church, where his parents are buried or another nearby locale.[2]

Research Notes

DATES

  • In the original profile, Henry's birthdate is listed as about 1532 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, co. Northumb. Given the 27 year plus age difference between Bertram and Henry, Henry's date of birth seems suspect. No evidence has been found to corroborate this date of birth, but the entry was left in place as a reference for future research.
  • find locations and dates of birth, marriage, and death for Henry Anderson.[10]

FAMILY

  • spouse and children not added in header to avoid creation of additional Northumb orphaned profiles.

LOCATION

  • Newcastle was part of Northumb until 1400, when it became a county of its own, established by Henry IV, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974.[11] Thus, to state that Henry lived in Northumberland is not accurate for the time in which he lived.

Anderson-4562 and Anderson-4567 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for Henry Anderson and name the same spouse, children, and locations of birth. The dates of birth and fathers differ (one being correct, the other not), but I am updating the sources/bio on Anderson-4567 as part of the unsourced files on the Northumberland team.
