Maitland was born the fifth son of Lt Colonel Abraham Colles Anderson and Anna Maria Honoria Brooke in 1846. Together with his brothers Paris Brooke Anderson and Farquhar Campbell Anderson he migrated to New Zealand. It was in 1869 that he sailed in the barque Icon, with his brother Paris to New Zealand. Maitland and Paris married two sisters, daughters of early settler Richard Robinson. Maitland married Edith Dring Robinson and Paris married Alice Annie Robinson.
Maitland and Edith had 5 sons and 7 daughters between 1874 and 1892.
He passed away in 1919 at his residence in Makara, west of Wellington.
He and his wife Edith are buried at the historical St Matthias Anglican Church Cemetery in Makara Road, Wellington, New Zealand. [1]

The late Mr Maitland C. B. Anderson, farmer, of Makara, predeceased his brother by a month, at the age of 73 years. He (Maitland) leaves a family of four sons and six daughters, namely, Messrs Colles and Lionel (Makara), Frederick (Longburn, late Pahiatua), and Private William Anderson, N.Z.E.F., at present at Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer Spring; Mesdames F. Lerwill (Wellington), George Barnes (late of Seddon), Charles Wroe (Waitotara), W. Walling (Eastbourne), J. Thornton (Masterton), and Miss Anderson (Makara).
