Lieutenant-Colonel A L B Anderson

Ts memoir (276p) and album (96p) of related documents and photographs compiled in 1928 dealing with his service in the 1st Battalion, The Connaught Rangers (Ferozepore Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division) on the Western Front from November 1914 to December 1915 and then in Mesopotamia (7th Indian Brigade, 3rd Indian Division) between January and April 1916. Anderson, who had been serving as a subaltern in the 1st Battalion The Connaught Rangers in India since 1910, was on leave in Ireland when war broke out, but was unable to rejoin his Battalion because of an injury which he had sustained. He was placed in a draft for his Regiment and finally arrived in France to join his Battalion on 29 November 1914. His memoir, which only covers his wartime service with the Connaught Rangers, is based on brief diary entries made at the time and on occasions it takes the form more of a regimental than a personal diary. He does say something about the landscape through which he travelled and he talks of the conditions under which he had to fight, but most of his account deals with the strategic and tactical aspects of the campaigns in which he was involved and with the personalities and subsequent fates of the officers with whom he served. In December 1914 he went into the front line trenches near Bethune and then saw action in the trenches in front of Givenchy (p24) and in the line at Rue de Cailloux (p32). In April 1915 his Battalion moved into the Ypres Salient and he describes in detail an attack on the Langemarck road by his Brigade during which his Battalion had to endure a chlorine gas attack (p73). He also recounts his part in the Battle of Festubert (p101-3) and a diversionary attack made by his Battalion on 25 September 1915 at the outset of the Battle of Loos (p145). On 11 December 1915 his Battalion left France and he describes their boat journey to Mesopotamia (p168-189) where they arrived on 10 January 1916 to become part of the 7th Indian Brigade of the 3rd Indian Division. His Brigade was involved in a series of ultimately unsuccessful actions against the Turkish forces designed to raise the siege of Kut. He mentions particularly the attack on the Turkish lines at the Hannah position on 21 January 1916 during which his Battalion suffered heavy casualties (p193) and the more successful attack on Mason's Mounds on 22 February 1916 (p219). The next major action in which his Brigade was involved was the abortive attack on the Dujaila Redoubt on 8-9 March 1916 and he gives an account of this battle and of the retreat under terrible conditions back to their base camp at Orah (p229-37). The British forces attempted to break out again on 17 April at Beit Aieesa and during this engagement Anderson, then a Captain, was badly wounded, and he briefly describes his experiences in the various first aid posts and hospitals in which he was treated before being sent to recuperate in India. The account ends at this point although he does briefly describe the other posts that he held during the war and in the immediate post-war years. At the end of the account is attached an album (96p) which contains official notes, documents, telegrams, maps and photographs illustrating aspects of his memoir.
