The Snorre Sturlasson shipwrecked at Port Alfred, South Africa and Carl was rescued. He was taken in by an English family (descendant's of the English 1820 Settlers) and then moved to Grahamstown to look for work as a carpenter, based on his apprentice as a shipbuilder from Gothenburg area.
