Biography

Nothing other than this vignette is known about Abraham. My paternal grandmother, Willa Augusta [Rusmisel-2] Landes told me this story in 1968, about two years after I was married and two years before Grandma's death. I think she did not think it was appropriate to tell this when I was a youngster.

Abraham married Catherine Druin. Catherine was married at age 17. Kitty, as she was called, was the next to the youngest of 11 children of William Druin and Susan Harriet Milby Druin who had a small farm in Greene County, KY. When Catherine was 13 her mother became ill and died soon after in January 1834. Catherine looked after her youngest sister for the next two years until Clarissa was 12 or in 1836. At that time she became seriously acquainted with Abraham Andrew who was 21. In the summer of 1837, Abraham and Catherine left Kentucky headed for Ohio. Catherine was pregnant and thus the driving force for her to leave her father and sister at home and travel with Abraham who had left his home in VA two years before. When the young couple got to Chillicothe, Ohio they stayed. Their baby, Susan Elizabeth Andrew, was born there in September 1837. In December of 1838, 15 months later when Catherine was 17 she and Abraham were married at Hillsboro in Highland County, Ohio. Then shortly after their marriage, they returned to Abraham's parents home area in Augusta County, Virginia with their year-old baby girl. Catherine and Abraham Andrew eventually had ten children. Their ninth child, my great-grandmother, Eliza Jane Andrew Rusmisel was born in 1859. --jwlandes [Landes-150]
