Mary (Andrewartha) Stephens was born in Cornwall, England.

Biography

Mary Guy Andrewartha was born at St Hilary in 1818, the fifth child and eldest daughter of Henry Andrawartha (1777-1831) and Mary Guy (1780-1853) and was baptised Mary Guy Andrew at Helston, Cornwall on 22 May 1818. She gave birth to a son, Richard Andrewartha in 1837 and he was baptised at Breage on 13 February 1837. On 15 December 1841 she married Edward Stephens (1821-1877), a miner, the son of Edward Stevens and Mary Goldsworthy at Gwinear and they had eleven children, all being born in Gwinear.

Nothing more is known about their family and descendants other than of their daughter Elizabeth Stephens (1853-1926), who married John Jones (1853-1910) at Gwinear in 1874. John and Elizabeth Jones emigrated to California in 1885 with their then family, sailing initially to Panama, then crossing the Isthmus of Panama by mule before sailing on to San Francisco. Their descendants are predominantly resident on the west coast of the United States.

Mary Guy Stephens, nee Andrewartha, died at Herland, Gwinear in January 1885 and is buried at Gwinear. Edward Stephens died in 1877 and is also buried at Gwinear. - by John Smith
