Biography

James Andrews immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

James Andrews was born Feb 21, 1625-6; he was baptized March 5, 1625-6 at St James Garlickhithe, City of London, London, England, a son of and Samuel Andrews, dyer and Jane. [1] He came to New England with his parents and siblings on the ship, Increase in 1635. His first wife was Dorcas Mitton; his second wife was Margaret (Phips) Halsey.[2]

Andrews, James, Saco, s. of Samuel of the same, rem. with his mother on her second marriage to Falmouth, married Sarah, dau of Michael Mitton, [3]had Elisha, who was a lieut. so early as 1689, under Church in his campaign against the E. Ind. and prob. James and Joshua that both died bef. the father. He abandon. Falmouth in the war, and d. at Boston 1704, leav. wid. Margaret, whose surname is not seen, the son Elisha, and three daughters. Rebecca, w. of Jonathan Adams, of Boston; Dorcas, w. of Ebenezer Davenport, of Dorchester; and Jane, w. of Robert Davis,[4]

James married (1) Dorcas Mitton by 1650 at Falmouth, Maine or Saco, Maine. He married (2) Margaret (Phipps) Halse/Halsey at Boston, Massachusetts, after August 6, 1696 when their intentions were recorded. [5][6]

James inherited from his step-father Arthur MacWorth a large farm on the bay, to the east of the point in 1674.[7]

In May 1657 James Andrews received a grant of 100 acres at the upper end of the marsh, on the Fore River.[8]

In 1675 James Andrews Senior, James Andrews Junior and Samuell Andrews were among 17 men who departed the garrison at Falmouth to fight in King Philip's War.[9]

On Aug 11 1676 the Indians attacked Falmouth, killing a number of people. Several people took refuge in James' Andrews garrison on his island for a few weeks to a few months.[10]

In April 1689 Mr. James Andrews petitioned on behalf of the inhabitants of the eastern parts of Maine, on hearing the awful news of what had happened at Pemiquid, asked for more forces to defend them. [11]

On Jan 4 1698 James Andrews gave his grand-daughter Jemima Snelling land in Falmouth as a gift.[12]

James Andrews removed from Falmouth to Boston in 1675.[13] James Andrews aged 79 years dyed 5 May 1704.[14]

James Andrews, mariner, made his will 4 January 1698/99, leaving: son Elisha, ninety-eight acres in North Yarmouth and four pounds; wife Margaret, half of his goods, chattels and personal estate, his negro servant Will and the cow; the other half to his daughters: Rebecca, wife of Jonathan Adams; Dorcas, wife of Ebenezer Davenport; Jane, wife of Robert Davis. Wife and Rebecca executrixes. Proved 25 May 1704.[15]

The baptism and marriage records of this part of Maine may have been destroyed in the 1675 and 1690 attacks as they don't seem to exist.
