Biography

Ann (Andrews) Sawyer came free to the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Ann was born in 1833, the daughter of James Andrews and Mary Anne Whitcombe. (Birth registration not located).

In 1848, Ann and her family boarded the barque Palmyra at Plymouth as assisted emmigrants. They arrived at Port Phillip on the 19 July 1848. "The Somerset Years", by Florence Chuk, page 84 begins a chapter on the Palmyra, including a description of the voyage. The passenger list included: James Andrews, aged 40, occupation - labourer, religion - Wesleyan. Mary Ann Andrews (nee Whitcombe), aged 42. Elizabeth Andrews, aged 18, occupation - housemaid. Anne Andrews, aged 16. James Andrews, aged 13. Emma Andrews, aged 12. Richard Andrews, aged 11. Esther Andrews, aged 9. William Andrews, aged 7.[1]

In 1849, Ann Andrews married George Millen.[2]

In 1873, Ann Andrews married John Sawyer.[3]

She passed away in 1912.[4]

Home at last; thy labour done; Safe and blest, the victory won; Jordan passed, from pain set free, Angels now have welcomed thee. Inserted by her loving son and daughter, James and Annie.

Rest, dearest mother, sweetly rest, They miss you most who loved you best; Yon always strove to do your best, And now have gone to heaven to rest. Inserted by her loving daughter and son-in-law Emma and George Donovan, and grandchildren.

SAWYER.—In memory of our loving mother, Ann Sawyer, who died at her residence, 166 Sutherland-street, Paddington, April 24, 1912. Inserted by her daughters and son. Mary, Esther, and Will.[5]
