Note

Note: Vans note: Was married by her fathers cousin Francis Andrews, pastor, M.E. church, Grahmsville, NY.
She was born on the Andrews place on the top of Mutton Hill.
She died at Emerson's place at 153 Mill St., Liberty, NY
Her obituary reads:
AMELIA J. HORNBECK DIES AT AGE OF 82.
Mrs. Amelia J. Hornbeck, mother of Van Hornbeck, of Monticello, died at Liberty on Monday, August 12th, at the home of her son Emerson, with whom she had lived for the past six years. The cause was general disability. Mrs. Hornbeck was born at Neversink Sept. 16, 1846, and at the time of her death was aged 82 years, 10 months and 27 days. She was the daughter of Richard Andrews and Sally Ann Brundage. She married Melvin Hornbeck, of the town of Neversink. Mr. Hornbeck was a school teacher and farmer of that town. In later years he was elected school commissioner of the second commissioner district and was a success in any position in which he was placed. The ceremony which make him the husband of a real lady was performed by the Rev. Francis Andrews, who was a relative of the bride. Mr. Hornbeck died Oct. 7, 1921, at the age of 75 years. Mrs. Hornbeck was a member of the Methodist Church of Neversink, and an active worker in the Ladies Aid. The funeral will be held today and interment will be in Grahmsville. Surviving are two sons and one daughter. They are Emerson Hornbeck of Liberty; Bertha H. Denman, of the West, and Van Hornbeck, of Monticello. A daughter, Sarah A. Hornbeck died Feby. 12, 1919, during the influenza epidemic. Mrs. Hornbeck was a splendid woman and was the mother of a splendid family, which is as fine an eulogy as can be paid to any mother.
Van cut a poem that he wrote on "This was my mother":
When Father carved out Christmas bird, And asked us each what we preferred, As sure as summer follows spring Came Mother's, "Please, I'll take a wing,"
We Children never wondered why She did not sometimes take a thigh, Or choose a drumstick or a breast. We thought she liked the wing the best.
She said it with such easy voice, It seemed so certainly her choice... I was a man before I knew Why mothers do the things they do.
By Richard Armour.
Vans note: Life was not easy for her. At a donation party, she was talking to the minister. I ran to her and she picked me up and said to the minister "this is my baby" meaning that I was the youngest. I slapped her face, scrambled down and ran away. The three older of her children had it harder, Van had it easiest of all.
She went to Dansville to the water cure where she had such a good time.
