Biography

Newly discovered baptisms for the three oldest children of John Heald, the immigrant, (ie. John 1633, Timothy 1636, and Anna/Hannah 1639) places their births in the parish of Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. A marriage in the nearby town of Sandal Magna, Yorkshire, in 1631 for John Heald and Vnica [Eunice] Blackeburne, provides the mother of these oldest children.[1]

Since the marriage of Johannes Heald & Dorothea Royle, took place in 1636, in Alderley, Cheshire, England, they were an entirely different couple.[2].[3]

Dorothie/Dority (_____) Held was named at the births of John's children in Concord, Massachusetts, beginning in 1645.

26 Dec 1666,[4] Widow Heald held 6 parcels of land, 161 acres and resided north of Joshua Buttrick.[5][6] The widow had (1) seven acre houselot, (2) twelve acres of first division and two acres of second division, (3) four acres of meadow, (4) one hundred acres, another one hundred acres, unrecorded, (her son is to have 33.5 acres of this), and (5) five acres in the great meadow.[3][7]

Dorothy may have been living 2 Feb 1691/2 when she was listed as an abutter to land sold by Samuel Hunt.[8] A Dorothy Heall died 29 Oct 1694 in Dedham. There were Heales and Healeys in Dedham but Torrey had found no connection between the deceased Dorothy and the other Dedham families.[3]

Find a grave has her buried Old Hill Burying Ground Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. However there is no source for this burial [9]

Torrey: "The compiler of this family history does not accept the theory that Timothy Hale of Windsor, Conn., and Suffield, Conn., and Thomas Hale of Enfield, Conn, were sons of John Heald of Concord.[3]
Threllfall lists an additional son, Thomas [Heald]: Thomas b. 19 Jan 1651/2; d. 22 Apr 1725, Enfield; m. (1) 18 Nov 1675, Enfield, Connecticut, Priscilla Markham; m. (2) 17 Dec 1713 Enfield Widow (Sarah (Patch) Osborn.[10] However according to Torrey and Jacobus (both cited by Anderson), this Thomas' last name was Hale (Thomas Hale Jr (bef.1651-1725)}, and he was a son of Thomas Hale Sr (abt.1610-bef.1679). See Research Notes section. Thomas Heald (abt.1650-) has been disconnected as John and Dorothy's son.

  4. The process whereby lands were recorded in a "new" book began in 1663. Referring to Shattuck's History the actual list is on pages headed 1666. Hudson's history implies 1663. Torrey gives a very specific 1666 date, and had no reason to fabricate this date, so it probably came forom the actual records.

Evidence Thomas and Ephraim are children of Dorothy and John Heald [only sources for them are a Ancestry Tree? The West Article does not List them. Perhaps they should be detached. Also, Ebenezer should be detached from mother as he has no credible sources attached to him and he is not a confirmed son of Dorothy and John. Thoughts?

Are there any reliable sources placing her in New England by 1640? If her spouse had a child with his first wife in 1639 in England, he and Dorothy may not have married by 1640 when he immigrated.

Should she be PGM?

posted by S (Hill) Willson
No there is no proof of her arrival before 1640, although logically I think she probably did arrive before. Her PGM designation was placed when she was believed to be Dorothy Royle the only wife of Heald (since deprecated). She does however need to be Project protected.

New research : NEHGR Winter 2023 - "The Correct English Origin of John1 Heald of Concord, Massachusetts" by Randy A. West has uncovered baptisms for John's oldest three children all in the same place (not Alderly, but Wakefield, Yorkshire). In addition a nearby marriage to Eunice was found, making Eunice the mother of these three children and Dorothy ______ a second wife. Since the first child John was not born in Alderly, this means that the wife Dorothy was not Dorothy Royle.

Dorothy will need to be changed to Dorothy Unknown and the first three children attached to the first wife Eunice.

Thanks very much, Anne. That all makes sense in light of the new article.

Once the new information is incorporated into her profile, we can change her LNAB to Unknown.

This profile contradicts itself. Was she born in 1612 in England, or 1620 in Massachusetts? Or perhaps do we just have no idea?

Isaac, you are right that this bio could use a re-write and alignment with the data and the (reliable) sources. WikiTree is 100% collaborative so it would be great if you could clean this one up. Thanks!

Thanks, Bobbie. I've asked the manager of Dorothy Royle's supposed son to change the mom to Unknown.

Mother supposedly died in 1600, 15 years before her birth.

DB Errors Project:

A mother's birth date should not be more than 67 years before the birth date of one of her children. A mother's death date should not be before one of her children's birth dates.

Royle-21 and Royle-2 are not ready to be merged because: father must be decided before match
