Samuel's Story

Based on his recorded age at death, Samuel ANDREWS was born ca. 1777.
Samuel and his wife Sarah were long-term inmates at the St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London from at least 1813 to 1832. As workhouses were funded through donations and a levy on local businesses, access to the workhouse was usually open only to the poor of the local parish. It is therefore likely that Samuel and Sarah were originally of the Marylebone or an adjoining parish.
Whilst resident at the Workhouse, Samuel and Sarah had three, possibly four children:
  • James (b. 27 May 1813, his identity is doubtful and requires confirmation)
  • Jane (27 May 1814)
  • Henry (29 Apr 1816)
  • William (2 Jan 1819).
In 1832, their daughter Jane emigrated to Australia in search of a new start and a better life. She became the foundress of a large clan of ANDREWS and GOULD families. The fate of her family back in Marylebone is unknown.
Samuel ANDREWS died in late Dec 1838 and was buried on 26 Dec 1838 in St.Marylebone. His burial record records his age as '61' and notes that he was a workhouse inmate.[1]

Workhouse Records

I'd love to take look at the Parish records, including the archive of the Workhouse records to study the origin and fate of the ANDREWS family, but alas, these are in London and I'm in Sydney...

Similar records

There is another Samuel Andrews: Samuel Andrews (b.1782) who was baptised in Finsbury in 1782, son of Samuel and Sarah Andrews. He is probably the same person as the Samuel Andrews who died at St. Mary Newington, Surrey in 1839 (Samuel ANDREWS, b. ca. 1783, d. Jan 1839, bur. 9 Jan 1839 in St.Mary, Newington, aged 55, workhouse inmate).[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
