Biography

Margarett (Angell) Garton was a Virginia colonist.

Margaret Angell was born in Lancaster county, Virginia, a daughter of William Angell. Margaret married William Garton, born 1635, in Scott county, Virginia. Margaret was mentioned in the Will of her father, which was dated October 20, 1659 and recorded October 30, 1659, in Lancaster county. [1] On January 25, 1659, Hugh Brent and Abya Bonnison present an inventory of the estate. The estate was apparently tied up in courts for years to follow, as this entry in the Lancaster County Court 3th of January 1674/75 indicates:

  • "The difference dependinge att this Cort. betweene WILLIAM GARTON, who married MARGARET, the Daughter of WILLIAM ANGELL, (deced), Plt. against URIAH ANGELL, Administrator to the saide WILLIAM ANGELL (deced), Defendt,, is referred to ye nexte Cort." [2]

Children of Margaret and William are:

  • (possibly) John Garton, born 1654, in Rappahannock, Virginia, died June 12, 1698, in Richmond county, Virginia, married Martaha Adelade Martin [3]
  • Uriah Garton, born 1672, in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster county, Virginia, died August 5, 1755, in St George's Parish, Spotsylvania county, Virginia, married Winifred Dickinson [4]
  • Margaret Garton, born circa 1682, in Christ Church Parish, died after 1742, in Spotsylvania county, married Thomas Morris [5]

Margaret died in 1702 and was buried in the churchyard of the Christ Church, in Lancaster county, Virginia. Her husband died December 12, 1708 and is buried with her. [6]

Research Notes

Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties [7] sets Margaret's date of birth as much later than her Find A Grave memorial, and also gives one more child: Catherine Garton, born before 1690, http://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I084542&tree=tree1

Additional children are listed in this family tree: http://www.avocadoridge.com/carney/getperson.php?personID=I23773&tree=tree1

It is difficult to know Margaret's actual date of birth unless christening records are found. We know that she was living in 1659, when her father wrote her Will and that she was married by 1674, when her husband and her brother were working out the details of her inheritance in court. If she was born in 1639 (marking uncertain) then she could possibly be the 15 year old mother of John, born 1654. Also, her Find A Grave memorial gives her date of marriage to William as 1660. John Garton may not be hers, and if so, it is doubtful, but not impossible, that she is the mother of Catherine, born so much later. [8]
