Biography

Charles was born between 1729 and 1736, parents unknown. He passed away about 1776. [1]

Charles Angel and Sybella Cummings were married from most saying in 1756. New information has turned up saying 1751. There is no citation which would prove either one at this time.

Charles Angell, a planter in Surry Co., NC, left a will probated in Surry Co., NC May Court, 1776. In 1777, the will was read. [2]

Research Notes

Origins: The origins of Charles Angel, planter in Surrey County, are unknown at this time. ** Samuel Angel and Jane Schulenbeck have been detached as parents, are likely fictional people, and should not be reattached absent primary source documentation. One merged profile said he was born in Rhode Island, the other in Virginia, but his origins are unknown.

The Thomas Angell immigrants all went to Rhode Island. The majority stayed fairly close, although some went to other states to live. None went so far South as where Charles Angel lived. Apart from one who did a stint in Florida during a war. My deepest feeling is that my Charles Angel [he is my 6th great-grandfather] is either a wider family cousin to the Thomas Angell lot and is not in the Descendants book or he is from some other Angel line. For a while I suspected he might have come over from England not long before meeting Sybella but try hard as I might, I can not find any trace of him from there. Mind, I may take a crack at Wales yet.

Therefore, if I can root around and find a good far-ranging Thomas Angell genealogy online or in a book, I might get somewhere.

NEW Charles Angell [From Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Angell]

Page 17 [16] Stephen Angell [died 1772] and his wife, Martha Olney of Providence, Rhode Island had their fourth child and fourth son, Charles Angell on 12 January 1732. . He is marked number 42 in the book. **I have seen other genealogy sites for this Charles Angell/Angel using this birthdate and the one above. Whilst it does not "prove" anything, I do think it is a case of people using dates which suit them sometimes.

Page 54 [42] Charles Angell married Jemima Taft. They had five children, John, Avis, Lydia, Charles, and Christopher.

“Charles Angell received of his father the farm now cultivated by Lorenzo Angell of Smithfield [RI] We are told that Jemima was his second wife' – that he had an enterprising family of children that did credit to themselves and their parents. We have not been able to learn much of their history.'

This is proof enough for me that this Charles Angell is not the Charles Angell most of us thought he was. Our Charles Angel predeceased his wife, Sybella, so he certainly did not marry a second time. The profile we have with us here is completely incorrect and is NOT in any way our ancestor. He very well could be a cousin. He never left Smithfield, Rhode Island.

There was a family of Angell's [with the two L's who went to Rhode Island in the great migration period and whom have collectively stayed in the same area since, albeit, by now they are all over the US, I am sure. Many think that this Charles was one of them but let me assure you, having a book which is about all descendants of the Thomas Angell from London who went to America as a young lad, is not one of them. I have pored through this book and made notations and many bookmarks and the entire family of Thomas Angell seems to be a one-off from our Angel's. I do believe they are related but not in direct line. Somewhere in England is the answer, most likely. [3]

For now, I recommend keeping some information but expelling the redundant and unnecessary, which I am going to do today. Any viewpoints of forward thinking would be welcomed.

Census: There was a Charles & Charles Jr. listed in the 1820 census in Stokes Co., N.C. [These would have had to be Charles the elder's son and grandson and probably will remove this as it does not pertain to Charles, the elder because he had died before 1820.]

    • Here is yet another [[Angell-478 | Samuel Angell] who needs merging. I have found two today. Samuel Angell/Angel is not a fictional person but clearly his wife is. I believe if we can find enough facts on him then we can merge and flesh out that one profile but it is likely that he is not he father of Charles. As to how someone thought Charles was his son is yet another mystery although suspicion runs high that it began on Ancestry.**

I found The origins of Charles Angel, planter in Surrey County, are unknown at this time. See research notes for possible avenues of exploration. One merged profile said he was born in Rhode Island, the other in Virginia, but his origins are unknown. **I am believing less every day that he was born in either place. I think he was probably born in NC or even in Virginia but by the time he was born, the Angells who came to the Colonies early days had already begun to spread in different directions. **

    • Thank you. I have placed this here as it leans much more into "Research" than giving it its own paragraph. In fact, this entire profile needs a good cleaning up and facts only with proper citations. It has become quite unwieldy with so many lengthy stories. Many of these can be made into citations. I will make a start on that today.**

The connection to Rhode Island seems to appear only at Ancestry where it is often repeated but questioned by a number of users as the source of this information cannot be found (the cited book does not appear to exist). It has been seen in some discussion that this Charles Angell is the son of a **Nicholas Angell of Northumberland County, Virginia but this currently lacks documentation. The surname Angell is found in Northumberland County in the appropriate time period. ** If you wrote down any information about this could you look into it, please? Charles had a father, we must find him**

    • Revisiting immediately above in regard to a Nicholas Angell from Northumberland VA possibly being Charles' father - I have searched in all the usual correct places with no luck, however, I found this on Ancestry, which is not even properly citationed and the birth date is off:

Name: Charles Angel Spouse: Elizabeth Parents: William Angel Birth Place: Northumberland, VA Birth Date: 1729 Marriage Place: Stokes, NC Marriage Date: 1751

    • I rather favour this birthdate for Charles and the 1751 marriage date. The reason is that this wedding date, married about 12 Jun 1756 is four years after their first born. 1751 would have been perfect and Sybella Elizabeth [this second name I feel may have been forced upon her by the Ancestry crowd who have wanted for years to make Charles' wife to be Elizabeth Ball Washington. Obviously we have no birth certificate on Sybella so who really knows] would have been 16 and Charles, if born in 1729 would have been 22. I know, we wouldn't allow it these days but do remember it was a different time back then. I do have all the children's birthdates but want to fix appropriate citations for each before putting them here. **

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:

Angel-1417 and Angel-583 appear to represent the same person because: Please agree to merge these duplicate profiles. Thanks! I recommend that his birth location be left blank, and that a notation in the biography should state that one merged profile said he was born in Rhode Island, the other in Virginia, but that his origins are unknown.

Kay, just happened across this profile while checking my Requests list. Neither PM on this profile responded to a Trusted List request when I was researching this family and ultimately dismantling the previously attached false Rhode Island lineage. That lineage was almost entirely fictional and has been merged away or people connected to the right families. The other profile involved here showing Rhode Island should not impede the merge as that information is false. The Virginia origins are entirely undocumented at this time but are worth further in depth research as noted below in Comments.

It is worth noting that the third great grandson of this Charles Angell, also named Charles "Charlie" Angell (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Angell-1448) invented the one-way plow which many believe greatly contributed to the Dust Bowl. Charlie is a distant cousin but I am not related to the subject of this profile. Descendants of these two Charlies are my neighbors (and the surname here is spelt Angell).

Kay, they were merged. The Angel-1416 redirects to Angel-583 which is now the only one I know of, having only just had to merge another one that cropped up...keeps me on my toes!
Angel-1417 and Angel-583 are not ready to be merged because: Need research on place of birth

One profile says he was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the other in Brunswick, Virginia. But neither has a source documenting the birth location. Angel-583 even states that the origins of Charles Angel are unknown. What if we leave the birth location blank, and make a notation in the biography that one merged profile said he was born in Rhode Island, the other in Virginia, but that his origins are unknown?

I'll propose the merge again.

Preparing to detach him from his Uncertain parents and move the info from Angell Trails to research notes as undocumented information. The current upstream lineage in Rhode Island appears entirely fictional for several generations. Suggest that the information regarding Nicholas Angell in Northumberland County be pursued. Is there any basis in fact for a Charles Angell, son of a Samuel Angell, born in Rhode Island who moved to Wilmington and then inland to Surry County? WorldCat shows only one book entitled Angel Trails which is a work of fiction.
posted by T Stanton
If he left Rhode Island realizing he would not inherit, how was he born in Brunswick, Virginia?

It should be noted many of the descendants did not drop the last 'L' in the surname and it today remains Angell. Dropping the last 'L' in the surnames of all children is not appropriate according to WikiTree guides.
