Biography

Ann (Linney) Jones is related to US President Abraham Lincoln. Here is the trail.

This person is an ancestor of President Abraham Lincoln. [1]

Narrative of Ann's Life

Ann Linney was baptized December 26, 1603 at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, England; the daughter of Floris Linney and his wife Helen (Benson) Linney.[2]

On November 24, 1626 at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, Ann married Thomas Jones who is probably the same as the Thomas Jones baptized at Caversham on January 23, 1602/3; the son of Roger Jones.[2] He was a tailor by trade.[3]

In April 1638, Ann and her husband Thomas Jones immigrated to New England on the ship Confidence, along with four underage children.[4] Those children who sailed with them were Abraham, Sarah, John, and possibly Hannah. Fellow passengers on the ship were John Benson of Caversham, his wife Mary Benson, and children John and Mary who settled in Hingham; these may have been related to Helen (Benson) Linney, Ann's mother.[2] Two servants, William Baunche and Jude Denley accompanied the Jones family on their transatlantic journey.[4]

The family settled in Hingham where Ann's husband was a proprietor in 1638.[5] Her last three children were born there.[2]

Ann (Linney) Jones died about 1650, probably at Hull, Massachusetts Bay Colony or possibly Hingham. Her husband was married two additional times; secondly to Abigail (unknown surname) Sumner, Ellithorpe in 1657 and then, thirdly, to Elizabeth whose surname is not known. Thomas Jones died before March 9, 1680/1 at Manchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2]

Children of Thomas and Ann (Linney) Jones:[2][3]

  1. Abraham Jones, baptized Henley on Thames, 19 October 1628; married Sarah Whitman.
  2. Sarah Jones, baptized Caversham, 28 January 1630/1, died at Boston, 3 December 1710 at about 75 years of age; married, probably at Hull, about 1651, Henry Chamberlain.
  3. Hannah Jones, born perhaps 1633, died at Gloucester, Massachusetts, 4 February 1724/5 at the age of 80 years; married at Gloucester, 20 November 1666, Richard Goodwin, son of Richard Goodwin and probably his first wife.
  4. John Jones, baptized Caversham, 5 November 1636, died at Hull, May 31, 1694, seemingly unmarried, "son of Thomas, Sr."
  5. Thomas Jones, baptized Hingham, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 29 March 1640; married Elizabeth Pitts.
  6. Mary Jones, baptized Hingham, 28 May 1643, died before 1681; no children.
  7. Ephraim Jones, baptized Hingham, 27 July 1649, died after 1717; married Mary _____. He removed to Manchester, Massachusetts, with his parents before 1658 and inherited his father's land there.[6]

Disputed Origins and Parents

This profile has been detached from Abel Greenwood and Elizabeth Mitchell as parents due to lack of evidence. The birth place of Halifax West Riding, Yorkshire, England has also been removed.

Note: The Ann associated with Thomas Jones with rumored maiden name Heywood/Haywood or Cowdrie is associated with Thomas Jones-3291 (as his wife). This profile was detached as mother of Thomas Jones-38155. ~ Noland-165 22:38, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Research Notes

1. The first child of this couple may have been "Maria Johnes filia Thome Johnes" who was buried Henley on Thames, 14 November 1627.[7] The following is a post-publication comment from author Robert Battle: "I wonder if Threlfall took the baptism in Caversham of "Marie Johns d [?Nicolas]" on 26 Sep 1627 as that of a daughter of Thomas, as this would account for him claiming that there were three baptisms of Thomas Jones's children in the Caversham PRs. My article relied on a transcription of the Caversham PRs which gives the entry as noted here, but perhaps Threlfall (or a researcher hired by him) was able to view the original PRs and thought that the father in this entry was Thomas. There would be no chronological problems for a child to be born to Thomas and Ann (Linney) Jones in September 1627 (they had been married 10 months earlier, and their next child Abraham was baptized about 13 months after this Mary). She may very well have been the Mary Jones, daughter of Thomas, who was buried in Henley on Thames in November 1627 (see note 19)."[8]

2. There is uncertainty about the birth order of daughter Hannah.[2]

This profile is protected by the Puritan Great Migration Project. Coordination with the project is needed.

Robert Battle, author of NEHGR article "The Identity of Ann, Wife of Thomas Jones of Hingham, Hull, and Manchester, Massachusetts" indicates in his article that the LNAB of Thomas Jones' wife Ann, should be "Linney," daughter of Floris and Helen (Benson) Linney of Henley of Thames, Oxfordshire, England. Also (if I am correctly understanding the article and the comment below) that this couple may have had a daughter Mary, born 1627, (before Abraham) who died young. (see footnote #19). Note that the birth order of the children on this profile needs to be updated since it differs from Battle's research of the records in England.

Project Leader, please see comments from Robert Battle (below).

Find the article here: [1]. I'm having difficult finding it at American Ancestors, perhaps because it was published recently in 2022.

Cheryl - once you do the text updates to her bio, we can change her LNAB. I didn't find a profile for her parents; do you want to create them and we can attach her t them as well?
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by S (Hill) Willson
Thanks S., yes, that sounds like a good plan of action. I'll comment when I'm ready to have the PPP lifted.

Leader S. (Hill) Willson: Parents are created. Please lift the PPP and I will ask for its return after I attach parents and change LNAB to Linney.

This profile and that of her husband and children are updated with most current research by Robert Battle. Some work will probably need to be done in the biographies of children when Ann's LNAB is changed to Linney, which I will do.

ready for PPP to return to this profile. Many thanks, S.
My article on the identity of this Ann (including the baptism of her son Abraham Jones) appears in the most recent Register (and is this issue's free article, so anyone can see it at least until the next issue comes out). https://www.americanancestors.org/sites/default/files/2023-01/Free%20Article-Fall%202022.pdf

Thank you! Some post-publication thoughts on the article--I wonder if Threlfall took the baptism in Caversham of "Marie Johns d [?Nicolas]" on 26 Sep 1627 as that of a daughter of Thomas, as this would account for him claiming that there were three baptisms of Thomas Jones's children in the Caversham PRs. Yes, thanks. I saw that, but trying to find it at NEHGS/American Ancestors. Can you find it there?
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Cheryl (Aldrich) Skordahl
Cheryl, the 2022 NEHGRs aren't yet published/indexed under the general search pages, if that's what you're looking for. They've only done through 2021 so far.
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Bobbie (Madison) Hall
Thanks Bobbie, I noticed that the index only goes through 2021, but was hoping it could still be accessed.

At the bottom of the page in article by Robert Battle there is notation, NEHGR 176:369-373 (Fall 2022), so in biography, for the citation, I'll use that without a link; will also include the free pdf link.

Hopefully all's well with our little WT world, Bobbie... :) Thanks.

Robert Battle: I've worked on the biography portion of this profile, and some on the data (but more will be done later, such as attaching parents, etc.)

For now, will you look over the biography and fix anything that is incorrect or misleading? I think you're the "elephant in the room" who knows most about this family. Thanks... (no offense intended).

posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Cheryl (Aldrich) Skordahl
Hi Cheryl, Elephant here, LOL. I won't be able to access my computer for a few days, but I only see one thing to be fixed--the marriage date and place for Thomas Jones and Ann Linney (which currently are the same as Thomas's probable baptism). Thanks for your work on this!
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Robert Battle
Oops, one more thing. In the research notes section, Mary Jones was buried in Henley, not born there.
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Robert Battle
Sorry, one more thing. The marriage of Thomas and Ann took place in Henley on Thames, not Caversham.
posted on Unknown-504514 (merged) by Robert Battle
Robert,

That "Mary Jones was buried in Henley, not born there" is the only one of the 3 fixes that I'm having problem with. In my review of research notes, I'm not finding any place where it says that Mary Jones was born in Henley... I only find two "buried in Henley..."

It's ok to wait until you have access to your computer, then reply to this comment. I have other work I can do.

I found some pertinent information at https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/9W42-VLD/thomas-jones-1602-1680 that could be added to this profile as well as others in this tree. It all links back to one of my ancestors about 5 generations back. Thanks.

The FamilySearch Tree should be used very cautiously if at all. It is user submitted and contains decades of accumulated errors. Seriously, there is no worse database in the world. It cannot be used at all on PGM profiles without backup support from primary documents. There is very little on the FamilySearch profile which appears to be correct. There is no evidence as to Anne's LNAB, birth date, origins or parents.

Does PPP need to be removed to merge this profile into lower # Unk-95338?

I created this profile because Unk-95338 was in Southern Colonies project with data that didn't match.

It's my feeling that we want to merge it into Unknown- instead of the lower numbered UNKNOWN- Unknown being the preferred format.

deleted my previous replies... this profile is in a proposed merge with Unknown-504514, which is correct styling (initial cap only), so I removed PPP & the Southern Colonies project box (someone will need to remove the Southern Colonies project account... it was manager when this profile was incorrectly attached as wife of a Thomas Jones of Virginia).

Thomas Jones' wife Ann, migrated with him - profile created, biography, adding PGM project box & PM.

I will create profiles for their children, later. Jones-52361 is one of their children - needs work before attaching.

Jones-37242 is a child of their son Abraham and his wife Ann - should be detached as child of Thomas and Ann.

from one of the many changes for this family... a marriage date of "25 Jul 1628" was deleted. Maybe it was meant for the Ann who married Jones-3291 of New England.

UNKNOWN-95338 and Greenwood-264 appear to represent the same person because: only wife of Thomas Jones, there is much genealogical discussion about her last name at birth, but, no records have been found to substantiate any of the claims.
