Biography

Martha "Patty" [Surname Unknown] is believed to have been born in Virginia. Martha's date of birth is unknown.

Martha was the second wife of Joseph Dodson. The date of their marriage is unknown but occurred sometime after 1766. It is known from deed records that Joseph's first wife Anne was living in 1766.^[1]

Martha and Joseph Dodson were the parents of one son, Joseph Dodson, Jr. born about 1771.^[2]

Research Note

There is no documented proof that Martha's "Patty" surname was Fairfax and Fairfax has been removed as her surname until documented sources can be provided to prove Fairfax was her surname.

There are some internet sites that list a Martha Ann Fairfax as marrying a Joseph Dodson about 1745 in Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, Virginia. This can not be the same Joseph Dodson that married a Martha "Patty" after 1766 in Halifax County, Virginia. Joseph Dodson is living 1751 in Fauquier County, Virginia with his first wife whose name was "Anne". Joseph and Anne Dodson sold land in September, 1766 in Fauquier County, Virginia (Fauquier Deed Book 2 page 609). No marriage record has been located in Halifax County, Virginia for Joseph Dodson and a Martha Fairfax.

1. ↑ Martha named in a deed in Halifax County, Virginia in 1773 when Thomas Dodson and Mary his wife, and Joseph Dodson and Patty his wife, jointly sold 162 acres to Benjamin Edwards. Patty signed the deed with the name "Martha Dodson". This is the only record that gives the name of Joseph's second wife.
