Biography

A careful reading of the preface and introduction to Charles Anthony's "Genealogy of the Anthony Family" reveals that he was not positive of the correctness of this pedigree.

“Our line starts with William Anthony, 1495, Cologne, Germany, who went to London, England, as the chief graver of the mint and seals to King Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.”
“Our line of connection between this ancient family and John Anthony, the emigrant, has not been established and fortified by complete and satisfactory evidence but numerous circumstances point in this one direction."

In the introduction, is a letter from C. Anthony of Buenos Ayres, South America. He mentions manuscripts in the Royal Museum. He also mentions the coat of arms listed for Derrick Anthony in the London Visitation and that of the Anthony listed in the Bedfordshire Visitation of 1634. The arms are identical except the addition for a second son. “beyond a doubt that the Anthonys of Bedford were descended from the same William Anthony of Cologne, Germany, living in the first part of the fifteenth century, though the descent may not perhaps be exactly as suggested.

It was said by Charles Anthony that William Anthony was born in Cologne, Germany, in the last half of the 1400s.[1]

The visitation of London agrees that William Anthony was from Cologne.

It is also said that he came to London as the chief graver of the mint and seals to King Edward VI (reign 1547-1553), [Queens Mary (reign 1553-1558) and Elizabeth (reign 1558-1603).[1]

The Visitation of London does not give William this designation.
However, there is ample evidence that it was instead his son Derick who was the chief graver at this time,[2] followed by Derick's son Charles.[3][4] There is no list of Chief gravers to prove that William wasn't employed in this capacity[5]
About 1540 The ecclesiastical mints were closed during the reign of Henry VIII leaving only the Royal Mint in operation.[6] The mint did employ German workers[7]

There is no mention in the original Visitation of London, that William had children besides Derick, but a supplement from 1634 lists Thomas and Francis in addition to Derrick.[8]

Children according to Genealogy of the Anthony Family:

  • Thomas Anthony[1]
  • Derick Anthony[1]
  • Francis Anthony m. Judith Roby daughter of William Roby of London[1]

Anthony-2804 and Anthony-272 appear to represent the same person because: Father of Derrick

Anthony-1289 and Anthony-272 appear to represent the same person because: I realize that birth dates are way off here, but there doesn't seem to be any other William Anthony in this family line, at least that I can source. If you'd like to merge William Anthony-1289 away please approve the merge. If you think he's someone else, reject the merge.
