Biography

Mary Jane "Jeannie" Anthony was born on 27 Sep 1837 in Hamilton, Marion County, Alabama. She was the daughter of William Anthony and Jane McMinn.

In the 1850 Census, Jeannie (age 15) was living with her family in Beat 6, Marion County, Alabama, United States.[1]

In 1853, Jeannie married Drury Henry Cox "Drew" Whitehead in Fayette County, Alabama. Their children were:

  1. Nancy Elizabeth Whitehead (1854-1935)
  2. William Joshua "Bill" Whitehead (1855-1934)
  3. George Buchanan Whitehead (1857-1939)
  4. Abraham Perry Whitehead (1859-1937)
  5. Nathaniel A. Whitehead (1861-1873)
  6. Mary Alice Whitehead (1865-1917)
  7. John Sherman Whitehead (1868-1951)
  8. Martha Francis Whitehead (1871-1957)
  9. Virginia Belle "Jeannie" Whitehead (1875-1889)
  10. Drury Grant Whitehead (1875-1962)
  11. James Harold Whitehead (1879-1969)
  12. Missouri Ida Whitehead (1881-1964)

Jeannie was 23 years old, married, and keeping house according to the 1860 Census. Drew and Jeannie were living in Eastern District of Marion County, Alabama. The couple had four children at this time.[2]

Jeannie and Drew were living in the New River area of Fayette County, Alabama in 1870. The Census called the area Township 13, Range 11. Jeannie (age 34) was keeping house and raising their eight children.[3]

The 1880 Census reveals that both of Jeannie's parents were born in North Carolina. Jeannie was 44 years old and keeping house in Fayette County, Alabama. She and Drew (47) had seven children living with them at the time.[4]

In 1900, Jeannie and Drew were living in Brown, Fayette County, Alabama. Their marriage year was given as 1853. They had been married 47 years. The couple had 13 children and 12 of them were still living at the time. She could read and write. Three children and a daughter-in-law were living with them.[5]

Drew passed away on 4 Apr 1914 in Dublin, Fayette County, Alabama. Jeannie filed the paperwork for her Civil War widow's pension on 26 May 1914.[6]

Jeannie passed away on 1 Jul 1916 in Dublin, Fayette County, Alabama. [7] She was laid to rest in the Morris Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.[8]
