Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Joanna (Antrobus) Tuttle immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Carrickfergus, Ireland

Father Walter Antrobus b. c 1555

Mother Jane Arnold1 b. 3 Jun 1571, d. 26 Nov 1612

Joan Antrobus was christened on 25 June 1592 at St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England.[1]

She married Thomas Lawrence, son of John Lawrence and Elizabeth Bull, on 23 October 1609 at St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England; They had 3 sons (John; Thomas; & William) & 4 daughters (Joan; Jane; Mary; & Mary).

Joan Antrobus married John Tuttle, son of Simon Tuttle and Isabel Wells, circa 1627 at of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England; They had 2 sons (Simon; & John) & 3 daughters (Abigail; Sarah, wife of Richard Martin; & Hannah).

Joan Antrobus and John Tuttle immigrated in 1635; On the ship Planter. The family settled in Ipswich where John was a representative to the General Court and a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and continued to work as a merchant selling goods from England and Barbados and sending barrels of mackerel, sturgeon, beef, oysters, bass, barrel staves and hoops back to them. About 1650 John went back to the old world and left Joan to run the business and settle accounts. Joan followed in 1654 and they settled in Carrickfergus, Ireland. John evidently was employed by the Irish Treasury.[2] Joan arranged to have her son-in-law George Giddings work as their attorney to handle the business in Ipswich. On 6 Apr. 1657 she wrote to “Sone Giding and dauter” from Carrickfergus to announce the death of John which was caused by “grife that he hath taken for his sons hath brought upon him a lingering deseas lost his stomach and pined away”. The “grife” was by their conduct as they had disappointed John by not forwarding money which they had collected and was due him.[3]

Joan Antrobus died after 29 January 1661 at Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland.1

Antrobus-211 and Antrobus-1 appear to represent the same person because: intended to be the same person, husbands are also a duplicate
