Biography

Lord of Perthyre Thomas ap William (1356-1438), Lord of Perthyre & Llansaintfraed manors, Gwent

Thomas, fourth and youngest son of Gwilym ap Jenkin ab Adam, was "of, Perth-hir, Rockfield, Llangatwg Feibion Afel, Monmouthshire, Wales."[1]

He "made a great addition to his fortune by marriage to Maud, daughter of Sir John Morley,[2] Lord of Raglan. She was "of, Llansanffraid, Llan-arth Fawr, Monmouthshire, Wales," where she is buried.

Second, he married a daughter of Watkin of Llanddewi Rhydderich ap Henry. Her name is not known. She was "of, Llanddewi Rhydderch, Llanofer Fawr, Monmouthshire, Wales."

He had 11 legitimate children:

  • Sir William Thomas of Raglan was the son of Mawd
  • a daughter, who married Thomas ap Llywelyn Gunter, was the daughter of his second wife - probably their only child[3]
  • Philip of Llansanffraid
  • Robert, rector of Llanfihangel Cwm Du and Llanwenarth
  • Mawd, (possibly m. Gwilym of Tyle-glas ap Philip)
  • Hywel
  • Hywel Fychan
  • Margred, m. William Wroth
  • Tudful, m. Gwilym ap Hywel Hen
  • Hywel y Bwlch
  • Dafydd
  • Ieuan, m. Margred ferch Gwilym ap Jenkin Grant was an illegitimate son by an unknown mistress.

He died in 1438[4] and is buried at Llansanffraid, Llan-arth Fawr, Monmouthshire, Wales (Priory Church, Abergavenny, Monmouth).

Research Notes

One profile create for William (since merged) had his birth in Caerphilly and his death in Llansantffread, Powys, Wales.

According to "Genealogies of Virginia Families", part of Maud's dowry "was Ragland Castle." Text apparently attributed to the same source continues: "Bradney says (vol 2, pt 2, p 3) that Thomas' son Gwillam, Sir William Herbert, bought it from his stepson, James, Lord Berkeley. The widow, Berkeley, Sir William's first wive, was Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Bluett. Bradney says Ragland Castle was given to Bluett by a De Clare who built it."[2] However, Thomas's son William "was able to buy Raglan Castle from the Lord Berkeley, his first wife's son, the deed, which remains among the Beaufort muniments, refuting the pedigree-maker's statement that he inherited the castle as heir of his mother Maude daughter of Sir John Morley."[5]

"Raglan manor, attained [by William ap Thomas] through marriage [to the] heiress Elizabeth Bluet, was greatly expanded by William and his son, William Herbert, into the well-fortified Raglan Castle, one of the finest late medieval Welsh castles."[6]
