William was born about 1830 to Samuel W Applegate and his wife Mary E. His siblings are

William was a farmer.
William served in Company C of the 29th Infantry Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, during the Civil War.
He enlisted 1862 August 25th for nine months and was mustered in September 20th as a sergeant at Camp Verdenburgh. He was promoted 1863 June 8th to first sergeant. He was mustered out 1863 June 30th at Freehold, New Jersey. [6]
William P was married 1853 November 30th at the First Presbyterian Church in Cranbury, Middlesex County, to Louisa Maria Ker [7].
