Frederick Edward Appleton was born in Guisborough August 15, 1878.[1]

He is listed as two years old and the second youngest child of parents James and Ellen who had five children over a ten year period. His father worked as a stable keeper and his eldest sister Jane was working as a Milliner at the age of 16.[3]

Frederick died in Middlesbrough October 26, 1918 at the age of 40. [7]
At 36, Frederick would have been of eligible age for service during the First World War (1914-1918). Several records for "Frederick" or "Frederick E." have been located though none contain a birth date, or birth location, to confirm it is this Frederick.
A large percentage of the British male population served during the war so it is quite possible Frederick did as well. A Frederick Appleton served from 26 Sep 1914 to 05 Oct 1916 in a Yorkshire Infantry unit before being discharged for Nephritis.
