Biography

Bessie Arbuthnot. Born Uniontown, Alabama 25 March 1871. Died Staunton, Virginia 28 October 1933. Married in Nashville, Tennessee, 18 May 1893, Samuel Hays Bell (born Augusta County, Virginia 15 November 1858; died Staunton 26 January 1903) son of Francis Bell and Sarah James, nee Kent. [1]

Bessie Arbuthnot was born in Uniontown, Alabama on 25 March 1871, the daughter of the Rev. Dr John Sawyer Arbuthnot and Bettie Whitsitt Arbuthnot [2]

In 1880, the family were living in Murfreesborough, Rutherford, Tennessee, USA. John, age 39 was a minister, his wife Bettie was age 32, and they had children Joseph, John H and Bessie. [3] (Surname transcribed as Asbuthnot)

Bessie Arbuthnot married Samuel Hays Bell on 18 May 1893, in Davidson, Tennessee, the marriage record book shows that they were married by Bessie's father John S Arbuthnot.[4]

The family were living in Staunton City, Virginia in 1900. Samuel was age 41 and a farmer, born November 1858, his wife Bessie was age 29, born Alabama March 1871 and they had children Sarah J age 6, born February 1894, Elizabeth A age 4, born December 1895, and Mary L age 1, born July 1898 [5]

Bessie's husband Samuel died in 1903, in Staunton.

On the 1910 census, Bessie was head of the household, a widow, and age 39. She had 4 children Sarah J, Elizabeth A, Mary J and Margaret K. Also living in the household was a servant called Andalia Smith and a roomer, 70 year old Pete Wilson [6]

Bessie continued to live in Staunton, and in 1920, she was living in Frederick Street, with her three youngest daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Margaret, and a 21 year old servant called Sally [7]

Bessie died on 27 October 1933, in Staunton, Virginia and was buried in the Thornrose Cemetery [8]

  • Mrs Bessie Arbuthnot Bell, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. John S Arbuthnot and Bettie Whitsitt Arbuthnot, died at her home in Staunton, Virginia on October 27, 1933. She was born in Uniontown, Alabama on March 25, 1871. In 1893, she married the late Samuel Hays Bell, of Augusta County, Virginia. From that time till the present she had lived in or near Staunton. Mrs Bell had been in poor health for several years and only recently had passed through a serious illness, but when the end came, she entered peacefully into rest. The interest of her life centered chiefly in her home and church. She loved people and her hospitality was unfailing. Her devotion to the First Presbyterian church, of which she was for many years a member, was an inspiration to others. [2]
