Emily was born in 1840. She was the daughter of George Arbuthnot and Agnes Rait.
UK Census Event Date 1841: Living with her parents in Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. She was just an infant. Also in the household was Lady Clementina Rait and 10 other individuals.
Sadly her mother died on 12 March 1842 at age 36. Her father remarried.
UK Census Event Date 1851: Recorded as a Pupil at Toxteth Park Extra Parochial, Lancashire, England. Aged 10.
She married John Burns 1st Baron Inverclyde of Castle Wemyss (son of Sir George Burns, 1st Bt. and Jane Cleland) on 27 November 1860 at Mavisbank House, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.[2]
They had five children.
Scotland Census Event Date 1881: Recorded in the household of her father in law George Burns, along with her husband and three children in Kelvin, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Aged 40. Also in the household were 10 other individuals.
Occupation: SHIPOWNERS WIFE
As a result of her marriage, Emily was styled as Baroness Inverclyde of Castle Wemyss on 28 July 1897.
She died on 14 February 1901 at age 60, two days after her husband.
