Biography

Disputed Last Name at Birth

Temperance's maiden name has been recorded in online family trees and genealogies to be Temperance Armistead. According to Lamb her maiden name was either Armistead or Armstrong. The D.A.R. lists her as "TEMPERANCE X ROBINSON" and states that "UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF MAIDEN NAME OF PATRIOT'S SPOUSE WAS ARMISTEAD OR ARMSTRONG."[1] There is no evidence to prove that she was the daughter of Elizabeth (Burgess) Armistead.

Research Note

Frank Lamb in The Henry Cowan Family of Virginia states that "Henry Cowan's comrade was Daniel Robinson who died in the service, and Henry was sent to convey the tidings to the widow, whom he met for the first time on this trip. After leaving the Army, he married about 1781 the Widow Temperance Armistead (or Armstrong) Robinson"[2] The name Daniel and part of this story is supported in the Revolutionary War Records of the National Archive where Private Daniel Robinson was wounded in October of 1777. No other service records are found for Daniel after this date.[3]

Peffley family researchers also state that Thomas Robinson's father was killed in the American Revolution and his mother Temperance remarried to Henry Cowan in 1784 in Rockingham County, Virginia.[2] Temperance Robinson Cowan was named in a letter written by Thomas and he stated that his mother "Grandmother Cowin is yet alive and in tolerable health" in 1834.[4][5][4]

I agree with you Raelynn. I will leave a comment on Elizabeth Burress Armistead's page and give a few days for that PM to respond before disconnecting. Thanks for comment and link.

See research note above. There is no evidence that Temperance Robinson Cowan had the maiden name of Armistead and is the daughter of Elizabeth Burgess Armistead.

I reviewed the sources as well as searched various others and find no evidence. She should be detached.

I also could find no evidence that Martha (Cowan) Jasper is her daughter. Martha (Cowan) Jasper is showing that she was born in Pulaski, Kentucky in 1778 to Henry Cowan and Temperance Robinson Cowan.

At that time, Temperance was married to Thomas Robinson who died in 1781. Henry didn't marry Temperance until after his death. There is no evidence that Henry or Temperance were ever in Kentucky. These facts are documented in "The Descendants of Thomas Looker" by Leallah Franklin and in the work of Oakley Merz at https://mertzgenealogy.com.

Perhaps she should be detached as well?
