Robert was son of Westwood Armistead (1763-1848)a Revolutionary War Veteran from Northhampton Co., North Carolina. He married Louisa Olive, 1826, in Wake Co., NC. He had one full brother, William Westwood Armistead, who moved westward with him to Mississippi and then to Louisiana. Courthouse records in Woodville, MS, show them both aquiring land in 1835-1839 in Wilkinson and Amite Counties. A deed for property in Natchetoches Parish, LA, was recorded 15 July 1853 "To be delivered on the first day of January, A. D. 1854 unto Robert H. Armistead of the County of Amite, and State of Mississippi" Census records for Amite County in 1850 show that all of his children were born in Wilkinson County. Robert was J.P. in Desota Parish, LA, when he recorded the marriage of his son, John Horn Armistead, 3 Dec 1867.
