Biography

John Armitage was married on 21 August 1564 to Agnetta Castell at Kirkburton, Yorkshire. He was of Almondbury parish, she of Kirkburton, and the marriage was also noted in the Almondbury register: Johannes Armitedge of Armitedge and Agneta Castle were married at Kirkburton.[1][2] They had children John 1565 and Godfrey 1568, both baptised at Almondbury of "John Armitedge off (or o/f) Armitedge". John and Godfrey are mentioned in John's will but there are other older children so the marriage to Agnes must be a second marriage.

He died in 1590 and was buried on 31 December 1590 at Almondbury, "Joannes Armitedge of Armitedge, yeoman".[3] He left a will dated 29 November 1590 and proved 22 April 1591 at York vol 25 folio 860, "Armytaige, John, Th’ermitage, par. Almonburye, yeom."[4] "I John Armytaige of Thermitage in the parish of Almonburye" ... He mentions wife Agnes, eldest son Nicholas, other children John, Beatrix, Dorothy and Grace, youngest son Godfrey, and married daughters Anne the wife of Henry Shaw, Elizabeth the wife of James Beamont, and Mary the wife of Roger Swallowe. Executors wife Agnes and son John.[5]

Research Notes

Has been confused in the past with John Armytage of Kirklees born 1546 died 1606 but the dates and wives do not match.

John had older children born before the marriage to Agnes so presumably had been married before. His birth was originally given here as 24 Jul 1544 (source?) but it must have been considerably earlier. Almondbury parish registers begin in 1557. Frances Collins in the Armitage family article attached to the Kirkburton registers says that he is the son of John Armitage of Armitage who died in 1561, and was aged 47 at his father's inquisition post mortem that year, so born about 1514.[6]
