As a child, he had his horse and wagon, took his dog on hunting trips and spent lots of time in his own wood working shop behind his parents house. He made friends easily and they loved to be with him at his home. He was adept at entertaining himself. He was a graduate of Gardner High School. After graduation he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Medical Corps 32nd Infantry from January 11, 1946 to August 13, 1947, and served as Medical Technician in Seoul, Korea. He earned a World War II Victory Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal, and was up for promotion when he chose not to reenlist. He attained the rank of Corporal. He was in the lumberyard business for over 32 years, retiring in 1980. He had been in the beef and cattle industry nearly his entire lifetime. He was a member of the American Polled Hereford Association. He had show stock and traveled throughout the United States taking many awards.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and also had attended the Westside Church of the Nazarene. He loved the outdoors and nature.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Evelyn Armitage, and two daughters.
