Per family history notes by Kathleen Van Hoose Snow, Charles' great granddaughter, he had ancestors who came over from England with Lord Baltimore and settled in Baltimore. I researched Lord Baltimore and he died in England, never settling in Maryland. He had a vision for Catholic settlers, found lands in Maryland, and sought a charter from the King to do so. It was his son, Charles Calvert who came to America with 300 Catholic settlers, and the charter was granted 5 weeks after Lord Baltimore's death in 1632. Charles Armitage was born in Baltimore, MD, lived at Armitage Plantation, Schriever, LA, and was buried at his residence in Terrebonne Parish, LA. The 1860 and 1870 Census Reports show that he lived next door to Francis Mead, his first wife's (Ellen Sargent) step father. He bought Armitage Plantation from Francis Mead. He died in 1872 and was buried at his residence in Terrebonne Parish. There are 50 recorded transactions in the LaFourche Parish Conveyance records for Charles Armitage, 8/23/1842- 11/28/1859. These include land sales, purchases, mortgages, renunciations, and slave purchases and sales. a conveyance on 11/28/1859, (#2722) shows "Grantor, Francis Mead, Grantee, Charles Armitage'" Find A Grave lists several Armitages buried at Halfway Cemetery, Gray, Louisiana. They died as children and the parents are not listed. I wonder if they might be related to Charles because of their birthdates. Gray, LA is about 4 miles from Schriever, LA. They are: 1) Mary Armitage, b. Jan, 1814, d. 4/29/1814; 2) William Armitage, b. 5/12/1816, d. 5/22/1816; C. Armitage was a member of the Police Jury for the Parish of Lafourche according to the Proceedings of the Police Jury, Parish of Lafourche at a meeting on November 23d, 1853, as printed in the Thibodaux Minerva, Thibodaux, LA, December 10, 1853. It is noted in the newspaper "The Weekly comet, (Baton Rouge, LA), 29 Jan. 1854, that "Mr. Charles Armitage has been elected to the Legislature from Lafourche to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Michael Thibodaux."
