Armstrong of Fort Worth, should read; John E. Armstrong of Fort Worth. Data: Text: Another link that bound us to the distant past was broken Friday night in Granite when J.B. (Uncle Joe) Armstrong passed to the great beyond. Deceased was one of the pioneers who braved the dangers and hardships of a new country to make it a safe place in which the following generations might find homes for themselves and families. Joseph Baker Armstrong was born in Tennessee January 1, 1842 and was 84 years and 16 days of age at the time of his death. At the age of eighteen he enlisted under the stars and bars of the Confederacy and served the full four years of the Civil War. He participated in many of the hard fought battles of the struggle, notably those of Shiloh, Miss., Mansfield, La., and Pea Ridge, Ark. After the war, Mr. Armstrong emigrated to Texas. In 1876, he was married to Miss Barbara Ward of that state. To this union seven children were born, four sons and two daughters of whom survive their father. The wife and mother died here about two years ago. They are Messrs. J.J., Milton, Newton, Arthur, and Mrs. J.H. Carothers, all of Granite, and Mrs. Kim Windom of Wheeler, Texas. All of the children were here for the funeral which took place from the Presbyterian church Sunday morning, Rev Bigbee in charge. With his wife and young family, Mr. Armstrong first settled near Granite on what was later known as the McMillion farm, three miles northeast of town. This was in 1886, when there were very few other white men in this section. The early hardships of these sturdy pioneers of which Uncle Joe was a true type, will never be known to the younger generatiion, who enjoy the comforts of happy homes that were made possible by the sacrifices of such as he. In those days, Quanah Texas was the nearest town, and all supplies had to be freighted from that point over vast stretches of unmarked country, infested by the last remnants of the warlike Commanches and roving bands of white outlaws. While Mr. Armstrong escaped the attacks of these, he was ever on the lookout for them and expected trouble at any time. Mr. Armstrong is also survived by one sister and two brothers. They are J.M. Armstrong of Granite, Thomas E. Armstrong of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Susan Evans of Hugo. Nearly fifty years ago Mr. Armstrong became a member of the Presbyterian church and ever lived an upright Christian life. Though he gave the best years of his youth to the fallen Confederacy, when the United States entered the great world war, Mr. Armstrong went his limit in buying Liberty bonds, when the money was needed to carry on the war. He was probably the largest purchaser of Liberty bonds in the county. The Presbyterian church was packed Sunday morning by friends and neighbors, who gathered there to follow the remains to the last resting place beside those of his wife in the City cemetary, and to pay their last respects to one whose life had been devoted to making his adopted home a better place in which to live. Rest in peace, Uncle Joe. There are none like you, and few who have done so much for humanity in making the wild western plains a land of peaceful, safe and happy homes. ÙCbÙD Card of Thanks ÙC/bÙDWe desire to express our sincere thanks for the many acts of kindness and sympathy shown us during the illness and death of our beloved father. May He who can reward you. We cannot.--J.J. Armstrong, Newton Armstrong, Milton Armstrong, Arthur Armstrong, Mrs. J.H. Carothers, Mrs. Kim Windom.

Quality or Certainty of Data: 3 Data: Text: ANSWERS TO ROLL CALL--Henry A. Evans, An Old Confederate Soldier, Dies At Talihina. Henry A. Evans, former County Commissioner of Pushmataha County died at Talihina on Monday morning last at 3 o'clock of heart trouble. Mr. Evans was troubled with a cancer in his face but this did not end his life. He had been subjected of late years to heart trouble and sometimes it became so acute that he could hardly get his breath. More than a year ago Mr. Evans moved to Talihina but for the last several conths he was in poor health. His funeral took place on Monday evening last. Services were held at the house by Rev.W.P. Pipkin of Antlers his old friend and co-laborer in the M.E. Church South, of Antlers. The remains were taken to Paris, Tex. on the early morning train on Tuesday for interment. Henry A. Evans was a North Carolinian by birth but went to Texas in his early life. He located in Lamar County. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. Gen. Hood was his corps commander. Mr. Evans was in some of the hardest fought battles, notable Franklin which was said to be the most stubbornly contested battle of the war, being almost a hand to hand conflict. After the war, he returned to Lamar County, Texas. He was nominated and elected County Commissioner of that county for the Paris district and served in that capacity for six years. About 12 years ago he came to Antlers and lived here until he moved to Talihina. When Oklahoma got statehood, Mr. Evans was elected one of its first County Commissioners. He was nominated at the Democratic primary for the Antlers district and elected at the first election in September, 1907, his republican opponent being Clark Wasson. At the end of his first term, he was nominated for a second term and elected, his republican opponent being the late Barney Noel. He was a candidate for a third term at the Democratic primary but was defeated by W.W. Williams of Corrine, the present incumbent. As a public officer he was an honest, straight-forward, conscientious man with more than the average back bone and no one could get him to swerve a particle from what he considered his duty. During his two terms as Commissioner in this county, nobody can put their finger on a single shady transaction. He leaved and widow and several children to mourn his loss. Title: Obit for Henry A. Kim Windom.

Notes

Note NI251Susan moved with her parents to Paris, Texas and married Henry Evans there in 1885. It was Henry's second marriage. They remained in Texas until the early 1890's at which time they made the short move north to the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. Henry was working as a housepainter there in 1900. In 1910, they were living in the new town of Antlers in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. At that time, Henry was county commissioner. It is probable that they did not move during this ten year period, since Pushmataha County was created out of the Choctaw Nation once Oklahoma became a state in 1907. In 1920, Susan, widowed, was living with her daughter Irma and son-in-law William Edgar Everidge in Antlers. In 1926, Susan was living in nearby Hugo, probably with her daughter Geneva. She died there in 1930.
