Funeral services for Mrs. Effie Catherine Armstrong were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Theo Benson, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Armstrong died September 15 in an Ardmore hospital following an illness of several months. She was born May 29, 1890 in Texas and had made her home in Love County for the past 57 years. On July 19, 1908, Mrs. Armstrong, the former Miss Effie Black, was married to J.E. Armstrong at Pike and they were the parents of one son. Mr. Armstrong preceded her in death. Mrs. Armstrong had been a member of the First Methodist Church in Marietta for many years, serving her church faithfully in every way so long as her health permitted. She had many friends throughout Love County who were saddened by her death. She is survived by one son, Max Armstrong of Marietta; two grandchildren, Tom Armstrong of Dallas and Mrs. Alton E. Services for Max Erskine Armstrong were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Goodrich Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Johnston, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, as the officiating minister. Mr. Armstrong died Sunday morning at his home here. He was born December 25, 1911 at Pike, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Armstrong, and had lived his entire life in Love County. He graduated from Marietta High School and attended Oklahoma State University at Stillwater. He served with the United States Merchant Marines during World War II and after his return home he was associated with his parents in the grocery and ranching business. Mr. Armstrong was one of the organizers of the Marietta Roping Club which for many years sponsored and produced the Marietta Rodeo. one of the leading rodeos in the state. He served seveal years as president and secretary of that organization. He was a member of the Marietta Fire Department for 25 years, holding the position of Fire Chief for several years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Those surviving are one son, Thomas Erskine Armstrong of Bellevue, Washington; one daughter, Maxine Armstrong Black of Felton, California, and four grandchildren, Thomas Bradley Armstrong, Elizabeth Clare Armstrong, Thomas Tyson Black and Mary Merrill Black. Burial in the Lakeview Cemetery was under the direction of the Goodrich Funeral Home. Serving as active casket bearers were J.T. Roberts, Bill Prichard, Jack Thurman, Lamonte King, Bob Michael and Bob McClain. Honorary bearers were Dr. G.C. Martin, C.M. McGee, Jack Brannan, Adle Malone, J.O. Martin, Melvin Wade and Ike Yokum.
