Mr. Andrew Paton, the tinman, appeared before His Worship, the Mayor, and Alderman Russell, to answer the complaint of his indented apprentice, Colville Armstrong, an orphan, for assaulting him under the following circumstances:- It appeared a few days since the complainant and house servant had some dispute in the kitchen, when defendant came in and ordered him out. On the following morning he said that he should not in future be allowed it the kitchen and he must take his meals in the workshop. The complainant replied that he was better out of it than in it, when Paton immediately struck him a violent blow in the eye, which was blackened from its effects. Armstrong detailed a list of grievances he had suffered, and the bench fined defendant 10s. and cost for the assault. The defendant asked what he was to do with the boy who generally behaved in a disobedient manner? The Mayor said, should the boy behave improperly, Paton could bring him before the bench, who were as willing to punish as protect.
