Biography

Andrew A. Armstrong (This historian questions the middle name of "Jackson") and Elizabeth M. Martin obtained their marriage license on 03 June 1844 in Washington County, Tennessee, and were reportedly married the following day.[1] The couple had two children: David Alexander Armstrong b. 16 Apr 1845, and Mary Jane Armstrong, b. 09 July 1846. Elizabeth Martin died sometime before 16 July 1849.

Andrew Armstrong and Sarah Graham/Grayham obtained their marriage license on 16 July 1849,[2] and were married on 17 July 1849 by her grandfather, Reuben Bayless, in Washington County, Tennessee.[3] It is said that Sarah was the mother of John M. Armstrong, referenced below in the U.S. Census of 1850.[4] Andrew's wife, Sarah, reportedly died 15 April, 1852 either in Washington County or Bradley County, Tennessee. No sources for her death have been located.

Following the death of Sarah Graham Armstrong, Andrew again married. Andrew and Katherine Humberd would have eight children. They are first found together in the U.S. Census of 1860 living in District 10, Whitfield, Georgia with four of their children: Andrew J. Armstrong (7); Artinsy Armstrong (5); Amanda E. Armstrong (4); Joseph A. Armstrong (1). Also living with them were David and Mary Jane from his first marriage and John M. Armstrong from his second marriage. [5]

The couple and their children return to Tennessee and are found living in District 3, Bradley, Tennessee in the U.S. Census of 1870. Living with them are their children: Andrew J., Amanda, Joseph, James, Jesse, and Martha. Although the children from the prior marriages had moved on, it is notable for Hartinsy not being with the family.[6]

At some point, they move to District 4, Bradley, Tennessee where they are found in the U.S. Census of 1880 with children Joseph, James, Jesse, Martha and Bascomb.[7]

Katherine passed away on 17 FEB 1892 in Cleveland, Bradley, Tennessee, but Andrew continued to live in the area. The U.S. Census of 1900 (taken 18th Day of June, 1900) has Andrew (a widower) living with his son, John M. Armstrong. Also living in the home is John's wife, Edna, and their children, Mary, Mattie, Edmond and Andrew. The Census further states that Andrew's DATE OF BIRTH is MARCH, 1812.[8] Some historians, including the creator of this profile, have listed his date of death as 25 Feb 1892. If this is the same person, he passed away after 18 Jun 1900. There is an Andrew Armstrong on FindAGrave, Memorial 61117782 who is supposedly him. This man died on 9 Dec 1900, date of birth is reportedly 18 Feb 1811, but the year appears to be 1818 on the headstone to me. I believe that more research is in order as I am not convinced that there are not two men in the area named Andrew Armstrong.
