Biography

Elias Armstrong has the same name as his father, but he is never referred to or uses the suffix Jr in the records of Shelby county, Alabama.

Elias Armstrong was born in 1849 in Shelby county, Alabama. Elias was the son of Elias Armstrong and Mary Elizabeth Gould.

Elias, age 1, appears in the 1850 Federal census in the household of his father Elias Armstrong.[1]

Elias and his mother, Mary Elizabeth, were in an accident in 1853. Elias' mother died in the accident and Elias was left with permanent brain damage. The 1880 U.S. Federal Census Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes, Shelby county, Alabama states that Elias was "age 4 when idiocy occurred", and the schedule stated that the size of Elias' head was small and long and the column's for the person being insane and being an epileptic were both checked.

Elias, age 9, appears in the 1860 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of his father Elias Armstrong. Note: Elias also appears in this census in the household of his grandfather, John Armstrong with his age given as 8 years.[2]

Elias, age 19, appears in the 1870 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of his Aunt Caroline Elizabeth Armstrong. Note: Elias is listed in this census as being insane and could not read or write. [3]

Elias, age 28, appears in the 1880 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of his Uncle Wesley Armstrong.[4]

Elias is listed in the 1895, 1896, and 1897 list of semi-annual disbursements by the Shelby County Commissioner's. The Commissioner's paid L.Q. Quinn nine dollars a month for keeping Elias Armstrong.[5]

Elias, age 49, appears in the 1900 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama as a boarder in the household of Loflin Gould.[6]

Elias, age 57, appears in the 1910 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama as a lodger in the household of Loflin Gould.[7]

Elias died in 1914, in Shelby county, Alabama.
