Biography

Rhoda was born in 1794. She was the daughter of Robert Armstrong and Nancy Greene, and married John Clary. She passed away in 1840, and was buried at the Old Concord Cemetery, Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois.[1]

Rhoda Armstrong

Before she was three, Rhoda Armstrong and her family moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. Here, in White County, she grew up and married John Clary. When she was 24, she and John made the journey from Tennessee to Illinois, by horseback, with their two small boys, Royal and John. Reaching Bond County (Ill.), they paused with relatives (probably the family of Rhoda's Uncle James Greene) until after the birth of Robert in March 1819.

After a rest of several weeks, John and Rhoda Clary and their children continued on to adjoining Madison County; reportedly they were the first white settlers in Springfield District (present Menard County). Their community became known as Clary's Grove. Rhoda lived the rest of her life there, and is buried beside her husband in Old Concord Cemetery.

Life in Illinois, as in all pioneer communities, required much hard work, perseverance, patience, and skill. Rhoda Clary became noted for her skill at spinning and weaving. According to family tradition, Rhoda once made Abraham Liincoln a suit of clothes "from sheep's back clear through all the processes." He in turn split rails and built fences for the Clarys.
